Former Rhodes Island frontline combatant Thorns, now a captain aboard an independent exploration-ship/scientific-vessel/finning-boat/cargo-hauler/pirate-ship. The moment we stepped aboard the Cuna de Nene, Operator Thorns handed us a piece of wrinkled cloth. It was only later that I noticed the numbers painted on it. To my surprise, it was data on his vital signs, but more surprising was how closely the numbers matched our official examinations. It was like magic.
I asked him about it, and he said it was something he came up with while darning the sails. He used the alchemical substance coating his arm he calls the 'Corazonix' to give himself an examination, ran the numbers himself, then jotted them down on a nearby scrap of sail canvas.
It's fine, I suppose. Maybe a bit haphazard, but it's never a bad thing to be thinking about your own health.

Sure, it fixes things up great, but whenever you've got something on your mind that silver goop starts flying everywhere and dragging along all the stuff you fixed with it! The crapper door keeps smacking into the crapper, and it's a real pain in the ass, so to speak...

Agreed.
Logically, the simplest solution would be to train myself to keep a cool head, while the most thorough would be to cut off the Corazonix I use as an adhesive to prevent it from reacting to my thoughts.
But my personal decision is to start developing a new quick-drying, waterproof, and high-strength multi-purpose adhesive. I think it would be a fascinating research project.

I've ordered Fabian to do strength exercises ten times a day, so the next time he's fastening the rope, he won't get tired and let it slip.

For the crew's safety, I beg you to reconsider the new name! We're looking at a mutiny here!

Denied.
Cuna de Nene was decided by drawing lots, as usual. As a saltfin, I highly doubt Nene used any underhanded tricks to rig the results. Besides, the Seaborn seem unlikely to respond differently to different ship names.
But if you do wish to mutiny, be sure to inform me ahead of time.

Hah, take it from me. One time he was charting our course with the first mate. One moment, he's talking about the ocean currents, next, he's calling my name, saying my tattoo's starting to swell and to put some ointment on it... I swear to Nene, I never told anyone I got a tattoo in the first place! Since it's of, uh, Nene's beautiful fin-spinning dance... Then there was another time he was adjusting the helm when all of a sudden, he pokes his head out from behind the wheel and hands me a bottle, told me to rub it on if I wanted Nene to play nice with me... How'd he know Nene nipped me?
Oh, but don't you worry! He don't really care about dark grudges or lurid affairs, and he's not one for teasing or blackmail either. It's just crazy how much he knows, and that lets him spot a whole lotta problems... Not that any of us can say when he'll decide to do something about 'em.

In the early morning, if it's a clear blue sky, you can see the Cuna de Nene entwined in shimmering silver threads. This is the only time of day you'll have the chance to actually see them in all their near-imperceptible glory. They are the handiwork of Operator Thorns, woven out of the alchemical substance called 'Corazonix' he bears on his arm. According to him, he can release this Corazonix to have it enter any sort of natural fluid (ie: air, seawater, or even flowing blood), inserting itself into the circulation and sending innumerable data points back to his arm.
When I say 'innumerable', I mean 'innumerable'. If I understood Thorns correctly, it feels like your ear is subjected to a foreign language, classical music, and a burdenbeast braying all at once, while your mouth is being stuffed with candy, chilies, and mud at the same time, not to mention the documentary, children's cartoon, and dance lesson being beamed into your eyes... How does he process all that information?

My dear colleagues, it has become clearer than ever that the Corazonix is itself a paradox.
The 'compass'—the most direct apparatus we can use to decipher it—is the product of many years of research, yet even with its aid we cannot know which of the Corazonix's tremblings tells the temperature of the air, which of its undulations mirrors the ocean's flow, or if its churning conveys of the average blood temperature of a school of fins or the direction of the next geyser to erupt. The way I see it, there is nobody who can interpret the irregular behavior of the compass's Corazonix... unless that interpreter already has a clear image in mind of what data they'll need.
For you see, a tool that can gather endless data has finally manifested itself, but it can only ever show us what the heart of man yearns for... Ah. Perhaps the rumors of a so-called 'guiding desire', as well as the name 'Corazonix' itself—thought up by the court poets to show off their skills—are rather fitting after all.

He also recovered basketfuls of fins snatched away by the monsters, meaning nobody had to go hungry. And just so you know, he was only able to learn any of these skills because I was there to support him, as his constant companion and closest friend—'
'But if the Captain Valourchin's always out at sea, doesn't that mean the two of you have split up?'
'Err... It's true that I didn't follow him to sea...'
'Then why do you look so happy? Didn't you say you were the best of friends?'
'I may not be out there among the briny waves with him, but we're still partners! Before he set sail, I thought about everything he might encounter during his adventure! 'You sure you're looking for Rhodes Island?'
That's what the sailor, beard festooned with clattering bone ornaments, asked me. My heart was leaping out my chest, but since I had already stepped aboard, all I could do was tell the truth.
'I-I was told there were people here who took applications for R-Rhodes Island supplies.'
He squinted his eyes, then led me into the depths of the ship's hold. It was like a ramshackle maze in there. Sometimes we'd have to crawl under Golden Age era steel frames, some still partially gilded. Other times, we'd have to climb up and down ladders fashioned from bone and finleather.
I was led to a dark room, where a pair of golden eyes stared at me from the other side. The sailor pushed me in, telling me I was on my own.
'Could you turn on the light for me? The switch is 23 degrees to your right, and 40 centimeters ahead.'
With the lights on, I could see who was talking to me. He had messy hair and unkempt clothes, yet gave off a vigorous, youthful aura. He examined me carefully in silence as he fiddled with some strange device in his hand. To tell the truth, this was not what I had in mind when I pictured a Rhodes Island office. All sorts of symbols were scrawled across the wall, while bottles hung down from the ceiling. As strangely-colored lights shone from them, I could faintly see fine threads running through the air. It reminded me more of a sorcerer's lair than anything else.
'I, err, think I might have gotten the wrong place. Seeing how this isn't a Rhodes Island office and all. I don't suppose you could just let me go in peace? I've got no money on me, a-and there's no one who can pay a ransom either...'
I clutched my autographed copies of the 'Saga of the Captain Valourchin' trilogy in my bag, trying my best to think of a way out of there. If I had really fallen into the hands of pirates, I thought, then the righteous Captain would surely come to my rescue, but until then, I'd have to rely on my own wits...
'Oh, what am I saying, this must be Rhodes Island... O-Oh! Terribly sorry.'
Upon hearing the name 'Rhodes Island', the young man's eyes lit up. He stood up all of a sudden, painstakingly dragging a plank covered in draft paper over from behind him. On the back of the plank was an impressively-carved rendition of the Rhodes Island logo.
'Sorry, there's not much space aboard, so rooms have to pull double-duty. This <i>is</i> Rhodes Island. Specifically, its high seas office. Trust me, we're the real deal. Now hand me your application form, and I'll see what we have available...'

'Sixty-odd years ago, whether aboard the Church's seaborne basilica or Alfonso's Stultifera, every time I returned, I could see their shining lights—Cerro del Faro, Ciudad de las Olas Doradas, sometimes Puerto Orgullo. Even in the middle of the night, the people would look out to sea with expectant gazes, eager to see what curiosities we had brought back from distant waters. I see that same eagerness, the same expectation in the eyes of those praising the 'Captain Valourchin'... I am afraid the people no longer fear the sea.'
'You mean to say he has led these innocents to cast aside the sanctuary of fear and embrace desire instead. Desire that will only invite disaster. All the more reason to punish him as soon as possible.'
'Or maybe what we actually need is someone to light a fire amidst the ashes. We will not find the answers we seek on land. No matter how much we fear it, Iberia's lifeline lies out at sea. [Captain's Log]
The sea's much calmer than I imagined. The day I set out to sea, the voices that once called my name from the depths no longer echoed in my ears. I observed every school of Seaborns along our course, yet they all seemed compelled by instinct—relentless expanding and devouring. I couldn't hear their murmurs or calls.
Now, all I hear is my own voice. Every time I call the Corazonix back to me, I can hear the rushing of my blood spreading further and further into the distance. At last, it is not the sea calling to me, but me calling to it.
I am trying to extend my searches further. At its distant limits, it takes an incredibly long time to recall the Corazonix, and I fear the accuracy of its information will be diminished somewhat. The further I go, the more the sea warps and mutates. Some of these oddities can be explained by large-scale Seaborn activity. Others, I believe may be due to Ægirian technology controlling things behind the scenes. But even further in the distance, there are phenomena I have no explanation for. There is some sort of abnormal 'tide' (for lack of a better word), completely unlike the one near the coast. As if the water of this distant stretch of sea is being pulled away by some unknown force.
I want to know what it is.
