Leontuzzo is somewhat nervous in the driver's seat. Today is the first time he's officially driving a car. Look both ways. Adjust the seat. Adjust the rear-view mirror. Fasten the seatbelt. Check the gear. Once all these steps are complete, he looks at the passenger seat with some trepidation. Lavinia sits there, his instructor for the day. Only once she nods does he let out a faint sigh of relief, turn the key, and start the engine. The car slowly trundles out the garage and onto the street. The streets are, as always, showered in a patter of drizzle. Leontuzzo flicks the windshield wipers, taking care to keep his foot on the brake, and not daring to go too fast. 'You're driving far too slowly, Leon. You'll never learn anything like that.' Her role as driving instructor has not given her cause to loosen her usual strictness. 'The more you remind me, the more nervous I get, Lavinia.' Leontuzzo has a death grip on the steering wheel, his eyes locked onto the road ahead, refusing to turn his head even an inch. 'Who was it at breakfast who was <i>so</i> excited to show off his skills to Demetri once he got back?' 'I let the steam from the bread get to my head.' As they speak, the car reaches an intersection. Just as the red lights are about to go green, several pedestrians cross. However, the moment they see the emblem atop the oncoming car, they immediately lower their heads and hurry down the rest of the crosswalk. Unfortunately for one of them, they trip and fall as they do so. Lavinia looks at Leontuzzo, as if asking him: 'What should you do in this situation?' '...I should slam the accelerator and run the red light. Best to give them a splash and a little scare.' But even as he says this, he presses down on the brake, letting the car slowly come to a stop in front of the crosswalk. The fallen pedestrian clambers back to their feet, giving the two in the car a slight nod of thanks before quickly leaving the scene. 'If most famiglia members drove like you, I'd be able to shave off a tenth of the cases I preside over each year, if only for minor incidents like just now.' Lavinia speaks with approval of his action. 'Honestly, there are simply too many traffic laws. I'm not keen on remembering them all either.' The light turns green, and Leontuzzo restarts the car. 'But there's one thing I've come to realize lately. We follow these so-called laws not because they are natural to us, but because they are self-evident principles we as a people discover as we seek justice.' 'Well said, Leon. It seems you have a thorough understanding of those traffic laws after all. Now let's see if you can actually remember them.' 'Oddio, Lavinia, are you seriously going to give a lecture <i>here</i>?' 'I <i>did</i> promise your father to teach you everything I know. So, Leon, what are those white lines by the side of the car meant to indicate?' 'Wait, give me some time to think...' The rains of Siracusa are endless and suffocating, but at the very least, inside this car, the warmth of chatter can be felt.
